I have heard so many wonderful things about this $75 nifty fifty. I was wondering if you folks would be kind enough to post some images taken with it. Can it really be as sharp as everyone is saying for that price? If so I don't know how I would pass it up!

My 50 1.8 is the cheapest lens I own, and also one of my favorites. I see no reason to buy the 1.4 or 1.2L. The 1.4 has some serious performance issues, and the 1.2, well, drop THAT and it's big bucks down the drain.

This is handheld, available light, no color balance since I love the yellow, 1/15 second at f/1.8, ISO 800, Canon 30D.

I unfortunately don't have any samples of this lens. I really don't use it too often, the poor thing. However, with the times that I have used it, it has just been great. It's definitely worth the $75 price tag.

Dumb question, with a 50mm lens you have no zoom then, right? It is about what you can physically see through the viewfinder?

It's just 50mm. No zoom. Check here for the field of view change from other focal lengths.

Thanks for that link, this is very interesting and very different than the "consumer knowledge" of 5X zoom, etc. Lots of reading and playing to do. Looks like I will have to get one of these lenses as they are cheap to play with...

Thanks again for that link, when I get home from work I will have more of a play with that.

Do they make this lens for the Konica Minolta Maxxum 5d?

You guys have it in the US @ $75??? I am finding it is a lot more expensive here in Australia. It may be cheaper for me to get it from the USA and pay for shipping!

Well, today I found a place that had one in stock... they also had the 50mm f/1.2 but that was a fraction too pricey for me.

I'm amazed at how quick this lens focuses considering it is a MM drive unit. But very accurate. I think I will be using this lens this week in the pens at work, although the min focusing distance is twice that of my standard lens it is quick and sharp, and with the f/1.8 it means I can get shots in the lower light.

I have to have more of a play with it before I comment further. It cost me AUD $140 for this lens, for those interested. The f/1.2 was $2699. I couldn't justify that. Yet...

exactly Des. take your lens thats like 18-55 set it to 50mm and look through it.. then pretend you can't change from that view..

Its a good lens cause then you have to move yourself to get the shot you want, too many rely on the zoom and stand in one spot.. Its a good teqnique to learn to shoot around the subject you want

That is very true, I used to rely on the zoom very much so, that when I went to this camera and also all the lenses (LOL) that I have, that it just isn't the same zoom-wise to my S2is.

I do like the 50mm lens though, very, very sharp images, I am very happy with it. It's a good thing to move around, I do that when working with animals that I do have to get down to their level on the ground and roll around with them to get the shots I feel define their character best! I think this lens will really come in handy, and as you say it is a good technique to shoot around the subject, I'm going to enjoy this lens!!!

I have to say thanks to the starter of this post too, without it I would have *NEVER* considered buying a fixed length lens...

This wasn't taken with the "nifty fifty" but with the more expensive f1.4. I only bought this one because the wedding photographer I was working with insited on me using something with a larger apperature.

Not that I know of but I am a Canon owner and do not keep up with others. They do have a 50mm macro prime but it is priced like what it is and the Canon offers the appeal of 'bargain'.

I enjoy adding a set of Kenko extension tubes to thee 50mm and use the lens this way more often than for 'normal' work.

I hate to say it, but your Minolta, while a good camera, is now obsolete because Minolta bailed out of the digital camera world. Sony picked up the Minolta product lines, but I don't know whether they make a lens like this.

I'm seeing on Ebay some old Minolta-mount 50mm 1.7 lenses, used for about the price of a new Canon one. I can't vouch for the quality of the lens, but it's available.

Unfortunately, it may well end up you'll have to dump the Minolta and switch to either Canon or Nikon, eventually.

I use my 50 as a macro lens as well. I have a silly little +3 Hoya I screw into the end of my fifty, and I get images easily as sharp as any macro lens I've ever seen. By the way, the 50mm Canon Macro prime is a dog -- it's sharp enough, but it's very very very slow focusing and doesn't do well in low light. Examples of my 50 with the +3:
