I took these two in Maine.
I know they don't go together but they were both from my most recent visit.
The apple orchard was in Auburn.
The building in Portland off one of the docks.

The first one doesn't really do anything for me. I think the composition is the reason why it just doesn't appeal to my eye. I may have tried to make where the street and the grass meet go more horizontal across the frame.
The second one I like, it is very interesting and makes you look at the details (worn door, cork board in the window, black doorbell, etc.) and the colors are nice. But clone out the couple letters from the yellow sign and your in good shape.

i agree with savone there. the first one has nice lines, but the shot would have worked better in b&w with a stronger focal point. the second picture on the other hand is great. it has very nice colours, texture and a lot of detail that makes you take in the image a lot more.

Hey Cannibal.. hope you don't mind but I've tried out the first one in b and w... I think it does look better. (Not sure on how it will look on your monitors.. as i'm using an old one for the moment and it appears darker than others)
I like the second one too... the letters on the yello need to be removed though... and would be awesome!
(I've tried to attach the pic, but it won't let me... I'll come back to this one after i've asked why this is so) ;)

Much better in b& W. Great secod shot. How about trying a bit of selective desaturation.
