When I go to parties and family get togethers I hate bringing my camera and my 550ex because it is just to big and clumsy for family snaps. I decided to buy a Canon 270EX and see if that is more to my liking. Of course it does not have all the advanced features of a 580EX or even my 550EX, but from the short time I played with it I love it. Its TINY compared to the 550ex and it still has bounce capability, although no swivel.
Some Pros:
* Tiny size which makes it easy to through into a small bag.
* Only uses 2 AA batteries
* lightweight (I can barely even feel this thing on the camera)
* Bounce/zoom head (Bounce stops at 65-75-90 degrees / zoom from 28mm to 50mm)
* high speed sync (one of my favorite)
Some Cons:
* No AF Assist beam (But it is flash pulse assisted)
* Does not through a lot of light (guide number 22 - 27 when zoomed)
I wanted to make a note to this point that it is great for small rooms or fill flash!!!!
* Can not be used as a slave to other Canon speedlites :(
All in all I am very happy with this little bugger. I can use it on both my G10 and my 5D.
Here is a sample photo I took with my 5D and the new 270EX. This room was only lit by one small lamp with a 50w equivalent compact fluorescent bulb. So this flash really did its thing here.
Just for s*%ts and giggles I popped it on the g10 and snapped a quicky of the wife and kid....
