I think the army man is too bright. I dont know exactly what you were going for here but I think if he was a little darker and not lit so flat it would have more of an impact. Also it would be nice to maybe see a tad bit of trees or something behind him instead of solid black. Just my two cents.

The direct flash is what's giving it that flat lighting. Ditch the direct flash and go with an indirect look; side-lighting or backlighting would be best for this subject, methinks. If you MUST use an on-camera flash, separate him from the background by at least 12 feet and point the flash up to feather the light some.
How are you doing your black and white conversion?

Geez, self-portraits are hard to do. I hated the self-portrait assignment in photo classes I took.
You've got a start here, though; you can pull it out in PS/PSP7 and make an effective image with it. I like the off-center framing. It adds tension to the image. The relatively shallow DOF in the rifle shot bugs me, as I'd rather see the focus on the muzzle of the weapon than on the subject, but that's more of a personal preference.
I'm not sure the monochrome really adds to the image, though -- you might try playng more with the color version than the monochrome one, since the colors of the BDUs are part of the identity of the soldier.
If that makes sense. :)
