Thread: Canon 40D Specs & Release

  1. Canon 40D Specs & Release

OK, I know info on this is ALL OVER the internet, but I wanted to start a new thread since everyone is saying the 40d will be coming out this month (august 23rd is what I hear). Anyone have any info or thoughts? I have seen two different sets of specs floating around:

    5 fps
    Digic II
    2.5' LCD
    10.1 MP

    --And--

    6.25 fps
    Digic III
    3" LCD with Liveview
    10.1 MP

Now, I think the second set is more realistic (or maybe it's just wishful thinking ). The 30D was such a small step up from the 20D, I think Canon has to make a big step up from the 30D or they will lose a lot of faithful comsumers to Nikon.

I also see a few threads saying the 40D is not needed at all, since the Rebel XTi is better than the 30D already. I have to say, I disagree with this. Yes, the XTi is a great entry level SLR. It has a lot of features for the price. But you still lack the fps, durability, and other smaller key features. But most importantly, it is an "entry Level" SLR. As a professional photographer, I cannot show up to a soot with an XTi. Even though it is VERY capable, it makes me look like an amateur. I would look more professional with a 10D even though it is much older and slower. I used to professionally shoot sporting events with a Rebel XT and would sometimes see a kid on the sidelines with the same camera. That just doesn't work for me! Unfortunately, image is too important.

  2. I think you are placing to much emphasis on gear. I really don't think the average person would be able to tell which is professional between a 20d and an xTi. This was proven to me when a 65 year old man with a 40 year old camera went out shooting with me. When we got home his images looked a hell of a lot better than mine. Of course it did take him a week to see his (film!).

Anyway, I am looking forward to see the 40d and what it has. I have been using the 20d for a year now and I still love it. Still a trusty camera and it pretty much does everything I need. I do not think I would upgrade to a 40d no matter what it has, I think I will wait until I can afford a full frame camera before I upgrade.

  3. Now, don't get me wrong, I KNOW gear isn't everything. a Rebel can out photograph a 1D anyday, if the photographer knows what he's doing. It's not so much the "image" between, for example, a 10D and a 30D, because they are both semi-pro level. But I do think most people could tell the difference between an "amateur" rebel and a "semi-pro" 10D, 20D or a 30D. The rebel series is a fantastic line of cameras, I have a Rebel XT personally. But, taking a Rebel to a professional shoot can make you look less established and less professional. Even photographers sometimes judge by equipment. Put it this way, have you ever seen a well established professional photographer using a rebel for his main body?

  6. Yuh huh. I'll believe all this stuff about the 40D when my Explorers of Light friends receive them for beta-testing and Canon announces it (I know a few Explorers of Light personally and I had real live specs and performance reviews on the Mark III before it was officially announced). As far as I know, the 40D is as much vaporware right now as the mythical Nikon product that can compete with the 5D.
