It is really a hard thing to give advice on. It all depends on what you shoot, your budget and what focal lengths your after.
The Canon 17-55 2.8 IS USM is an EF-S lens, which means it will not work if you upgrade to a full frame camera. These lens are specifically designed to work on crop camera such as the 40d. You may want to keep that in mind.
Depending on your budget, I like 2 lenses.
Tamron 28-75 2.8 is an AWESOME lens for someone on a smaller budget. This this is really sharp and has a constant 2.8 aperture.

You could probably get one for $350
My all time favorite lens is the Canon 24-70 2.8 L. For me it has the perfect focal length on my crop camera for what I like to shoot most. It is razor sharp, built like a tank, and incredible focus speeds and accuracy.

Usually around $1200, so it may be out of reach for most, other than the serious amateur or professionals.
