    Need help finding a lens

I have a canon 20d. I need to get a replacement for my kit lens (18-55).
I know what's out there, but my biggest concern is sharpness, and no reviews I ever read really make any of the lenses sound great. So I want to know from people who own wide to telephoto zoom lenses just how sharp/crisp they are. I mean, I want to see every pore on a persons face.

So if you have a zoom lens between with ranges around 17 to 90 (like a 17-70, etc) could you please tell me how they work for you and what their price range is?

I'm curious about Canon, Sigma, and Tamron.

I know "L" Series are the best, but I'm wondering if I can get anything for under 600.

  2. stick with the EF-S lens series if u are looking for a sharp lens under $600. those lenses are designed specifically for those cameras. Canon makes a wide rang of EF-S lenses... however, if u don't mind going outside the canon brand then i would highly recommend the Tameron 17-35mm f/2.8 Di LD Aspherical IF lens. it'll run you about $300 but it is one hell of a lens... you wont get as much zoom but it is very sharp and very fast and no need to worry about chromatic abrasion. I've used this lens for many shoots and i have always been happy with it's performance.

  3. Tamron 17-50 2.8
    Canon 17-40 f/4L
    Sigma 17-70 2.8-4

Those are the ones to look at if you need 17mm on the wide end.

I know ef-s lenses would be good but i know i won't have a 20d forever so i'd like to get something that will also work when i upgrade.

could you possibly show some 100% crops of the tamron lens?

do you view your images at 100%? i'd hope so. if so, crop part thats in focus so i can see how sharp it is.

    but nevermind. i'll look online.

  8. Those three I posted are all sharp, generally. However, only the 17-40L will work with FF. If you need a FF lens, ones like the Sigma 24-70 2.8 EX DG Macro and the Tamron 28-75 2.8 XR Di are nice. Might need to send the Sigma in to be calibrated/exchanged, but it's a nice lens if you do. I'd save up and buy a used 24-70L, but that's just me. There's no better on full frame cameras.
