Thread: Image Posting

  1. Image Posting

I noticed a lot of the old images that were posted are no longer showing up. Its because they were hot-linked and the image is no longer available. I wanted to start making a rule that all photos would have to be attached. Of course I would supply the unlimited amount of space it takes and there would be NO limit on the amount of attachments a user can make.

Anyone against this idea? I think it will preserve the integrety of a post long after we (the daily users) are finished. I know a lot of these threads show up in searches, without the images they will not be good to anyone.

    let's take a poll...

and just to make it clear:

    * THERE WILL NEVER BE A LIMIT TO AMOUNT OF ATTACHMENTS OR DISK SPACE A USER CAN HAVE FOR ATTACHMENTS

    * You will NOT have to resize images, you can upload a 5 MB file and the server will automatically resize it for you at 85% quality jpeg.

I agree especially because I have come across a couple of those threads with no photos in them.

Just came across another thread with no photos, I can see how it becomes useless!

  4. Don't think it would be a good idea. Sometimes it's just more convenient to use hotlinks.
Telling users that they HAVE TO post images a certain way might make the forum seem too strict & less desirable.

For me it would be a pain to have to save the image to my computer then use the uploader to upload the pic and whatever else steps are involved.

If an old thread has no pictures maybe it should be deleted if there is no valuable or interesting information in the thread.

    just my opinion.

Oops I accidentally voted NO when i meant to vote YES.
LoL I shoulda been a blond.

  5. Adaptive,
I understand you point and it is a very valid point. I would like to point out a new feature of the attachments system. When you click manage attachments you have the option to put a URL. It will then go out and fetch the image form the URL and turn it into an attachment.

So therefore you would not have to do anything different from when you are hot-linking (no saving to computer, etc..).

    Thoughts?

  6. yeah that's pretty cool, never knew about that. still haven't tried it but sounds cool.
would definitely be a good idea to highlight this feature somehow to make it more known.
maybe just make some kind of sticky in the introduction section so newcomers can see this new feature.

still think it would be a bad idea to tell people that they "can't" do it a different way though.
