    Muslin backdrops

Not sure if this is the right forum, if not forgive me.
How do you remove the wrinkles in your backdrops, and clean them?

Anytime I have a baby in the studio most of the props and blankets will get peed on. And heaven forbid I have a family that wants their picture taken with the family dog. Hair everywhere.

  2. The answer is "it depends".

Muslins come in many forms. Some solid color, some painted, some dyed, etc. Painted Muslins, typically, should not be washed. Hence, I don't suggest you use them for infants because of the risk of pee and poop. You will not be able to wash the muslin without risk of changing or destroying it.

Solids and dyed muslins can be machine washed. For child and infant photography I tend to be in this space. I have black, white and earth tones. I have solids and sheers in each. All machine washable.

As for wrinkles..... I have a steamer in the studio. Mostly for model and client clothing that might need a retouch in the studio. The steamer also is used to iron out wrinkles from sheers and curtains setup in the studio for a number of "sets". I also use it to iron out materials I use to wrap models in. Also used for maternity shots, etc. The muslins in the studio are all permenantly hung in my studio. This means they are never folded but rather hang in the studio from a rail system. This lets me keep the muslins reletively wrinkle free.
