Thread: Help with Cropping and placement

  1. Help with Cropping and placement

I gave a tip about cropping for one of the new members. I see that "MOST" members don't go past the photo section. That why there is less written in the lower sections (You should check it out like the contest for this site second from the bottom). Anyway that why I am placing this here.

1st tip was to use the scroll down on the page to look at cropping from the top.

2nd not listed before is buy a mat and cut in the upper left and lower right hand corners 11x 14 should be the most you need but depends on your screen size (Cause most of us are digital). Cut at a 45% then use them like a slide rule. Moving it back and forth till you see a pleasing crop. Remember shoot big cause you can crop. Shoot small you might not get the crop you want.

Watch out for thing sticking out of your subject from the background, Placing the subject or breaks of subjuct matter in the center of the photo.

Rules of 3rd's If you were to taake the photo and place 3 line from top to bottem then side to side this will give you a grid at the intersections are the sweet spots try to get your subjust in that spot.

I know some of you will go "I know this sh!t" but this is not for you.

I was teaching photo composition tonight and mentioned to my students that rules of thirds goes all the way back to Michelango and will still be important a thousand years from now.

  3. Here is some History for you. The First recorded info that a Camera would work was by an Arab Nomad. He was in his tent and the slaves were walking around on the outside. There was a pin hole in the tent He could see that people were walking by normally yet projected upside down and backwards. So he wrote this down. Making this the 1st recorded account of a pinhole camera.
Thank you Mr Stukey, Suitland High School Photography Teacher 1979.
