The photo was one of my first with the Nikon D50. I was using the Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6G Vr lens.
The setttings was on Auto; 185mm at f5.3 at 1/1000 sec.

Following your suggestions I straighten and cropped in Photshop Elements.

    Any comments please

  2. Nice shot good leading lines from the pathway and it repeats it self in the clouds. The only thing as far as the Photo goes if the rocks on the other side did not go far past the point where you are then show the end of them. Also if this is a working lighthouse do some night shots w/ the light on.
Side note congrats on the new lens and when is the trip so we can see a warm place ? lol

As Richard has pointed out, the lines leading out to the lighthouse, the repetitive pattern, and the fact that the lighthouse breaks across the line of the clouds all add to this composition. I also like the heads sticking up above the concrete barricades that give the image some scale. However, if I were you, I would be working on adjustments with the brightness/contrast and hue/saturation sliders; there is some real drama to be had here with some minor adjustments to the lighting.

I too like the picture, I might try some custom white balance settings, something to fool the camera to bring out more warmth and colors.
Of course you can do this in PS after the fact if the picture was taken in raw format.

  5. The trip will be in April. The lens I have not bought yet, but like the rest I lean toward the camera manufacturer so I will be buying the Nikon 18-200 to travel with.
Thanks for the comments I greatly appreaciate them. I am still learning to use the manual settings on the camera and beginning to use the Photoshop Elements Program. There is so much that I have to learn and play with. As for if the lighthouse is working or not I don't know. I will post a few of the lighthouses that I took in South Carolina and Georgia at a later date. As for a warmer time I am looking forward to it also, we are expecting up to foot or so of snow in the next couple of days. I know that is trivial compared to the snowfall that the east coast recieved, but like so many I am tired of snow. Maybe I can learn to take some snow pictures.

  6. Thats just beautiful, love the colors and love the bird! Composition is perfect in my opinion.
