One I cropped out the excess structure and straightened the water line. Both ships were moving at what seemed like a good clip.
These were shot with a Kodak point and shoot. What can I do to make them better?

I think you were trying to frame the picture and if you were, I would remove small sign on the bottom and kept the original entire window/picture frame in the picture. Sense you don't have that, I would remove the picture frame. But that is just my opinion.

No way, I thought the first was very creative. If you want to straighten the water line, that's fine, but I wouldn't do any other cropping. Framing is a great technique as it gives the viewer perspective and scale with which to measure what lies inside.
Fibonacci, you like it even with the corners cut off? Just wondering.
Yes, I do. To the far left we see what the corner would look like if it were included in the frame so our minds can fill in the blank. That is part of the reason I don't care as much for the second image since those corners are missing there. To be honest, I would have like to have seen Newbie take a step back and to the left to get the frame a bit closer to head-on, but it really isn't bad as it is.
I can see what you mean, about our mind filling in the corners. Just curious to your thoughts, thanks for answering them.
