There are lots of geese around my apartment, so I decided to have a little photo shoot with them the other day. They're nesting right now, so they strike some pretty cool poses when trying to scare off intruders. Several students have been attacked by them, sometimes just walking by on the sidewalk. It got downright comical when one built a nest in the crook of our main class building, right next to the door! The geese would guard the stairs up to the door, hissing, running and sometimes even flying at people as they went by. A lot of people decided to walk the long way around the building, rather than facing them. I'm a bit of a redneck, so I got a good laugh out of all this--and a couple of phone numbers after escorting the ladies past them! Anyhow, my photo shoot was a walk around the lake to check out several nests. I immediately noticed one especially aggressive pair. The female was on the nest under a tree, while the male swam about 20 feet out. I walked over, she hissed, stood up and spread her wings. About that time, I look over and he is chugging like a motorboat straight for me! He hit the bank and immediately got up. I sidestepped to get the sun out of the frame and just started shooting. I use an Olympus E-520 (3 frames per second max) with 14-54mm 2.8 lense. I guess it was quick enough that day. This guy tried to land on my head!
