Thread: Canon 100-400mm IS USM

  1. Canon 100-400mm IS USM

I decided to take back my Sigma 170-500 and get the Canon 100-400. Just can't resist the L and IS. Any opinins?

  2. I have never used that lens but I will venture to say you will not be disappointed. I had some sigmas that were very nice (150 APO is great) but they all lack in focus speed and accuracy compaired to the canon lenses.

  3. f/4.5-5.6 for the lose

If you already have the 70-200 then yes this is a great lens to add to the L family. Personally I've never had the opportunity to play with one so I can't give any personal likes/dislikes but I have read somewhere that it is one of the sharper zooms on the market. I think I read that it's sharper than the famous 70-200 f/2.8L IS. But yeah for $1300 to cover the 100-400mm focal length is a good deal. If you really want quality and sharpness with reach at low aperture you will need a telephoto prime and i'm sure you're well aware of the price tags on those suckers!

    yikes!

  4. No way is the 100-400 sharper than the 70-200L IS. I've had a couple 100-400's, and I've owned a 70-200L IS all along. The 70-200 beats it, and noticeably so, but the 100-400 is no slouch. It's quite sharp, very very versatile, and IS to boot, which is a godsend at those focal lengths (for me, anyway).

    Enjoy..you'll love it.

Sorry to sound like an argument, Adaptive..not my intention. Just stating from experience. Cheers.

Doesn't sound like an arguement at all, I mentioned not having any personal experience with the 100-400 so I was just giving feedback based on so called "facts" stated by other photographers on another forum.
