    Aperture and DOF

I couldn't find the silly questions forum so I am asking this here.

I sort of have a practical grasp of the relationship between aperture and DOF, smaller the aperture number the smaller the DOF.

My question is WHY does this happen? Don't be afraid to talk optics, I can't work out why it happens and no-one has a "scientific" explaination to offer me on it.

Anyone up to the challenge to explain to me why this happens?

    Des.
