Thread: A fallen soldier...

  1. A fallen soldier...

You guys wont believe what happen last night I was shooting an assignment in the studio and it was starting to get a little crazy with the lights and what not... well in the mist of everything, I tripped over my sync cable which pulled my camera off my entertainment center, sending it to the floor... The camera manage to survive the landing, thank god, cuz i would of cried lol too bad i can't say the same for my lens... it was my 50mm 1.8 II :-( my favorite lens. at first i thought i lost them both because the lens got jammed on the camera but i manage to get the lens off with no damage to my 20D that made me fell a little better but now i have to buy a new lens

Hey not that it is a good thing but at least it was an affordable lens. Savone dropped his 20d like 4 times, that thing can take a lickin and keep on clickin'

  3. lol yeah true true ^_^ i am happy it's an affordable lens... but i got worried when the lens wouldn't come off the camera o.O and it made this snapping sound when i did get it off... when that happened, my heart stopped O.O then i put another lens on and the camera is working fine but the lens... lol yeah.

  4. Yeah I used sync cord for the longest time, then I got smart and picked up pocket wizzards and MicroSync Radio Transmitters.

If you want range, virsitility, and don't mind spending about $400 get Pocket Wizzards they're truely great.

If you want to save a buck or two and would rather not have big bulky pocket wizzards get MicroSync Radio Slaves. They're really small so be careful not to lose the transmitter (It's about the size of a quarter, mine is still missing hehe) The cost is $199, range is awesome for indoors shooting like weddings and studio work.

Definately worth the investment as you now know, not only does the sync cable limit your movement, it also is dangerous for your camera, and dangerous for models (they like to trip on cables)
And when models trip over sync cable, which is attached to your camera and a light. The modeling tripping over the cable will either knock over your light, or rip the male end of the cable out of your camera. Both are not very fun....
I don't know how long you been shooting tied up with the sync cable but if you shoot for a while and switch to wireless it will feel VERY strange for a while!!! But at the same time it's a relief and you'll love it!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I tripped over a sync cable infront of a model before. I didn't fall but I tripped and we all just laughed. I always do goofy stuff so they might have thought I was just joking but either way it was a good chuckle at my expense.

Also like I said in my other post in this thread, when changing models i've had models walk by and snag the cable and that usually results in the cable ripping out of the sync port in the camera. I think doing that enough times eventually made the sync port work only sparatically. I found myself having to shove the plug into the port and HOLD it there because if I didn't HOLD it sometimes the strobes woudlnt fire causing me to miss shots!! That's when I finelly gave up and got the pocket wizzards. actually no, I think I had the microsync's first.

Everythign you need right there. The little piece (size of quarter or CF card) slides right on your hot shoe. The other piece plugs right into the back of most lights, you might need an adaptor though. Or you could always go to radio shack and pick up a double male end cable and use it that way. This double male end cable is only like $3.00, 0r you can get the plug adaptor is here.

Or you might also beable to find the plug adaptor at radio shack for cheaper.

  7. I didnt really have any need for a pocket wizard so I decided to give this product a try.

Very affordable wireless flash trigger. I use it and NEVER have any problems with it. I have had it for about a year and have used it both outside and indoors. The range is about 60 (not the 100 they claim) feet give or take and also depending on the location. But for less than $50 who can complain.

I like to use it with my 580ex, with a small adapter that holds a small umbrella and flash on my tripod. Travel light but always ready!

  8. does not support TTL for the lose

also I bet you can range 60 indoors and 40 outdoors.

but yeah that definately looks like a pretty cheap and useful alternative to using a sync cable! And I'm sure you could get more range using that than using a sync cable anyways so that is probably well worth it.

    good find steve

I dropped my 50 on my wood floor a couple weeks ago. It works fine but looks like it made all sorts of specks of tiny glass shards float around on the inside of the lens. I don't think that it effects the pictures though.

  10. yeah... i think my lens would of been fine if the 20D wasn't following right behind it... plastic lens, heavy semi-metal camera crashing right on top of it o.O... yeah lol that lens didn't stand a chance. now if i had the 50L which is a metal lens... i think it could of stood a better chance.
